The Mainstreaming of Contemporary Art: Is Jay-Z Dumbing Down Smart Art?

14 Jul

Picasso & JayZ

When the celebs start infiltrating the art world I have to say “no”! They’ve already ruined fashion (JLo, Rihanna, Jessica Simpson and even Beyonce!). Now they are slowly trying to enter into contemporary art.

The current rap-god, Jay-Z…also married to pop queen Beyonce, was performing at NYC’s Pace Gallery this past week. He posted on twitter that he will be delivering 6 pieces of art following the release of his new album and this was his first. The initial coverage I saw of the event seemed to indicate it had some relation to performance artist Marina Abramović. Apparently Jay-Z was presenting his own take on Abramović’s piece she did at the the Museum of Modern Art, where she sat for 750 hours in stillness while visitors viewed her. At Pace Gallery Jay-Z was rapping his new song “Picasso Baby” for six hours in front various art world and hipster VIPs. With Mr. Z’s new album coming out, he was using this time to shoot his video for the latest single, directed by Mark Romanek. Having worked on many music videos, a 6 hour shoot is nothing compare to the usual 12+hour days of a video shoot…that’s a lucky production crew.

It bugs me that Jay-Z is using Marina Abramović as an access point into the art world. When the contemporary art world succumbs to the glitz of celebrity I find it disappointing. I’m glad for Pace Gallery to get a lot of coverage and maybe some sales, but it all appears to be a silly publicity stunt. Jay-Z is obviously a smart man and an great opportunist. He is super successful. Is he taking “art” and making it accessible to his audience? Kinda. I think what he’s doing is replacing the Gucci-Prada-Louis Vuitton element, which is so prevalent in rap… which is the element that gives rappers the sense of being rich and sophisticated, and is replacing it with big art names. Before the fashion brands were the signifying status symbols, it was expensive drinks like Cristal and Courvoisier to show clout and cultivation. In his new song “Picasso Baby” he raps the names of Picasso, Rothko, Warhol, Koons, Condo, Bacon, DaVinci and Basquiat. Well it seems he took an art history class. He’s using very well known/text book names in art and I guess to the common man it would seem very cultured to know them. It would be different and maybe more interesting if he rapped about Lari Pittman and Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
Ok, maybe he’s not quite ruining contemporary art. It makes me laugh at Jay-Z and Pace Gallery for trying so hard – and yes I can laugh at myself for taking art so seriously sometimes. It’s good that he’s bringing awareness of art to a new audience, but it still bugs me a little because I’m an art snob.

Met Gala: Punk, Mall Punk & Grannie Couture

7 May

I swore to myself I wouldn’t do another red carpet review because they are so bad now a days, but the Met Gala had some of the most embarrassing interpretations of punk and I had to dish.

First of all there were a hand full of stand out punk couture attendees:

-Madonna totally owned the look in Givenchy punk plaid, fishnets, and a dommie wig. Loved it.

-Sarah Jessica Parker really gave high-punk-couture in Giles Deacon. She totally called the right guy. Her mohawk head piece was stunning.

-Paloma Faith was totally on par with SJP. She look freakin bad ass hot in Michael Cinco (never heard of him, but love him now).

-I loved Rooney Mara in her Givenchy (almost everyone wore Givenchy probably because he was co-chair and his line is so hot right now). It was really the idea of the night; how punk has influenced fashion. I wish she would have worn those big earrings from the collection too. She never wears accessories, but I did love her dark lipstick.

There were a lot of people who looked very nice and presentable, like Gwen Stefani in a demure but cool Margiela ensemble (I expected a better look from her). Katy Perry was a bit more byzantine than punk but looked good in Dolce & Gabbana. Kristen Stewart and Cameron Diaz both wore remarkable Stella McCartney outfits. Florence Welch looked bewitching in black fringe Givenchy. There were a lot of just pretty dresses that were nice to see but nothing outstanding that you can’t see at the Emmys.

Now for the WTF:

People are loving Nicole Ritchie’s look. She did have on this sort of beautiful vintage looking/brocade type dress. I’m not looking it up, but that’s what it looked like. Her hair was absolutely unforgivably bad. I loved that she put some sort of white color in, but it was pulled back and she looked more like Mars Attacks than Met Gala. What was her hair person thinking?

Then there was Jennifer Morrison from my favorite show Once Upon a Time..she wore a lovely black lace Donna Karan dress, simple makeup, but her hair was done as a mohawk…but like she went to Supercuts at the mall and asked them to do it. If you’re going to go punk- match your hair, makeup and wardrobe…this goes for any look. I am so embarrassed for her. Hopefully some hair people are getting fired.

Beyonce, I love her but I think she thought she was going to the BET awards not the Met Gala. It was Givenchy, but I just didn’t love it for this. But she’s gorgeous and rich so she can do whatever. Oh, and then there was her sister, Solange. First, why is she at the Met Gala? Second, her dress is good for dinner out in Miami, not this event.

Ok, the grand finale of bad goes to Anna Wintour. It was Chanel, but it looked like my abuela found some Laura Ashely sheets and made a dress. It was all kinds of wrong, but very entertaining to dish on.

I was hoping to see more Zandra Rhodes, Jeremy Scott, Stephen Sprouse, Gareth Pugh, etc. It was a fun idea and I’m glad they did it, but I was a little disappointed in the amazing fashion opportunities missed.

Madonna ruled Roony was inspired SJP punk eleganza Paloma served it! Kristen looked great Cameron looked lovely Katy was Byzantine Gwen looked very nice Mars Attacks Nicole Jennifer - embarrassing When's the BET awards? Solange disappointed Anna in Grannie couture

Under Boob- fashion forward or slutty?

10 Jan

Today I noticed all the online articles raving over Beyonce on the cover of GQ Feb 2013. I clicked on to check it out. I do love Beyonce and she does look amazing in the shoot. She’s sexy & her body’s phenomenal- especially after having a baby recently (which was a key point in many reviews). What annoys me about all this press is that years ago when I was working with Xtina, she was dragged over the coals because of her outfit she wore to the MTV Awards 2002  was deemed skimpy(aka slutty) and showed under boob -gasp. I remember in the fitting she pulled up the scarf to show her under cleave and I laughed and did a “no-no that’s too much” disapproving nod. I was surprised when she came out on the red carpet with the under boob look. I was thinking “Aye Dios Mio, she’s going to get fashion-killed over this”- which did in fact happen. But it was also a time when her outfits were kinda “fuck it-I’m having fun” and fun we were having, even with the bad press. Plus I love hooker-couture…it’s amusing and it upsets all the fuddy duddy fashion people.  Cut to 11 years later and Beyonce is in some sort of mini-short-thong and crop top showing her under boob cleavage and being praised. I know it’s part timing (fashion has progressed & accepted slutty), part Americas darling (everyone loves Beyonce…Christina not so much), part attitude portrayed (yes we know Christina is a bitch), and part editorial-vs-redcarpet (do you dare wear that in public?); but I find it slightly annoying still. The press is the press and I guess that’s one reason I started my blog so I can express my views, which are usually contradictory to the main stream press (I always love the Worst Dressed best). My last comment is on why does every “celeb mom” do a sparsely dressed magazine shoot after they had a baby? It’s a little sad that they feel they have to prove to the public that they are still sexy even though they are mom’s. But that’s a different topic. I have to give stars to Beyonce because she always looks stunning & I have to give Christina a star too because she started the look.
